OpenClaw made the Mac mini the default home for personal AI agents, and plenty of people bought one just to run it. Before you do, it is worth knowing when a Mac actually matters, which configuration to pick, and what keeping an agent online 24/7 involves.

Do you actually need a Mac for OpenClaw?
Not always. OpenClaw runs on macOS, Linux and Windows. If you only talk to your agent through Telegram, Discord or Slack and it uses cloud models like Claude or GPT, a small Linux server is the cheapest place to run it, and OpenClaw’s own docs suggest exactly that for most people.
A Mac earns its place when you want the things only macOS can do:
- iMessage. OpenClaw’s iMessage channel needs a macOS machine with the Messages app signed in, plus the imsg tool and the right permissions.
- Apple apps and automation: Notes, Reminders, Calendar, Shortcuts and AppleScript.
- A real macOS browser for web tasks, and Apple-only tools like Xcode.
- Local models running on Apple silicon through Ollama or MLX, next to the agent.
Which Mac mini to get for OpenClaw
OpenClaw itself is light. Memory matters when you add browser sessions, lots of skills, or local models. As a rule of thumb:

For most people, a 16GB M4 is plenty. If you plan to run local models, go straight to 24GB, because memory on a Mac mini cannot be upgraded later.
Buying vs renting a Mac mini for OpenClaw

If you are happy to keep a Mac at home and look after it, buying is cheaper within a few months. Renting makes sense when you want the agent off your home network, need it reachable at a fixed address, travel a lot, or want to try OpenClaw on real hardware before spending $600 or more.
Give your agent its own machine
OpenClaw is powerful because it can act for you: read and send messages, touch your files, sign in to services. That is also the risk. Security researchers have flagged prompt injection, over-broad permissions and unvetted third-party skills as real problems.
The simplest protection is separation. Run OpenClaw on a dedicated Mac rather than your personal laptop, sign it into its own Apple Account and only the services it needs, and keep it off the network your family’s devices use. A dedicated hosted Mac does all three by default.
Setting up OpenClaw on a dedicated Mac mini
On a fresh Mac, the official installer handles Node.js and the rest. Then run onboarding and install the background service so OpenClaw starts on boot:
